They're both "Nintendo cards," but they do completely different things. One is money; the other is a membership. Here's the difference in plain terms.

Nintendo eShop card — prepaid store credit

A Nintendo eShop card adds funds to your account balance, which you can spend on anything in the eShop:

  • Full games, DLC, in-game currency, and pre-orders
  • Apps and paid upgrades
  • Even a Switch Online membership (yes — you can pay for the membership with eShop funds)

Think of it as a gift card or wallet top-up. Funds never expire.

Nintendo Switch Online — a paid membership

A Nintendo Switch Online membership is a subscription, not credit. It unlocks features for as long as it's active:

  • Online multiplayer in supported games
  • Cloud save backup for your game data
  • A growing library of classic NES and SNES games (and N64, Game Boy, and Sega Genesis titles with the Expansion Pack)
  • The smartphone app and member-only offers

It's sold by term — we offer 3-month and 12-month memberships.

How they work together

They're not either/or. The most flexible move is to buy an eShop card and use part of the balance for a Switch Online membership and the rest for games. If all you want is online play and the classic library, buy the membership directly.

Which should you buy?

  • You want specific games, DLC, or a gift: get a Nintendo eShop card.
  • You only want online play and classic games: get a Switch Online membership.
  • You want both / maximum flexibility: buy an eShop card and split it however you like.

Both are delivered instantly by email — shop eShop cards or Switch Online memberships now.
